The new media that I see as a possibility for society is virtual worlds. It will be sort of like the movie The Matrix where you indulge into another world. With the increase popularity of virtual reality and technology advancing in this sector very rapidly with investments from big companies such as Facebook, Samsung, and Oracle to name few, it’s only a matter of time before society learns to use it more frequent.
The new media that I have in mind would include virtual hubs, which would be small rooms that have a high tech chair for comfort, Virtual reality glasses and cables that will connect to the back of your head/brain. I know this doesn’t exist yet, but please just imagine it. These cables will be connected to your brain in some sort of way so that they can transmit the 5 senses of the virtual world to you. Individuals will be able to submerge into other worlds and take trips to places they have never imagined. This to me is the future of media, where people sink into worlds that are imaginable. The media that allows you to hear, taste, smell and touch in a virtual world will completely transform our world, hopefully for the greater good.
This might all sound a bit crazy, but the wave of virtual reality is closer than some might think. In an article in Quartz written by Jo Marchant called, “Virtual-reality worlds filled with penguins and otters are a promising alternative to painkillers” shows us the advancement in this technology.  A product called Snow World, developed by Cognitive psychologist Hunter Hoffman, was created with the mission to ease pain of patients with severe burns. The world was designed to divert patient’s attention away from their pain while receiving treatment. The experience itself is of you indulging into a world where you are flying though a virtual ice canyon while exchanging snowballs with penguins and snowman. This is one of the few things virtual reality is already doing, and it’s only a matter of time before the whole world starts using it for more things.
